MLS (Multilingual Learner Support), Grades 9-12
Multilingual Learner Support is designed for current ELs and some FELs who would benefit from targeted support, including academic language support. This course is encouraged for all 9th and 10th grade students identified as ELs at the entering, emerging, developing and/or sometimes expanding levels of language acquisition, and is usually taken in addition to ELD class for those students. This course is also encouraged for FELs who would benefit from extra ELD support and may be taken in place of, and sometimes along with, a second world language. In MLS students will work on skills such as: communication with teachers and classmates, navigating school systems such as Google Classroom and extra help, organization, academic writing, oral presentation skills, oral participation skills, student specific language goals, annotating and/or previewing content, and/or previewing tier 2 and content specific vocabulary related to upcoming learning. MLS teachers may also help administer assessments as part of language accommodations, including up to 50% extra time. Students receive a P/F grade. This course can be taken for 1 credit or 0.5 credits.Â
